Walter Bonin Obituary

Walter T. Bonin of Marlborough, MA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, after a brief illness.

Born and raised in Marlborough, he was the son of the late Walter E. and Marion (Brunnell) Bonin. In addition to his parents, Walter was predeceased by his sister, Diane Kittredge.

A proud graduate of Marlborough High School, Class of 1959, Walter began his career at Digital Equipment Corporation, where he worked until his early retirement. Following retirement, he founded Bonin Financial Services, working as a financial planner.

Walter’s lifelong devotion to his hometown began at age 27, when he won his first term as Ward 2 City Councilor by just five votes. He went on to serve for 12 years, including his time as the City Council President, and later continued his service as Chairman of the Marlborough Licensing Commission and as Director of the Marlborough Community Development Authority.

In addition to his public service, Walter was a gifted inventor, holding 10 U.S. patents and numerous international patents for innovations including a circulating piston engine and a personal impact protection device. His blend of civic dedication, inventive spirit, humor, and curiosity earned him the affectionate reputation as “Marlborough’s own Benjamin Franklin.”

Beyond his professional and civic achievements, Walter enjoyed reading, golfing as a longtime member of the Marlborough Country Club, and restoring classic cars. Above all, he was happiest in the company of his family. Walter and Joanne, the love of his life, built a beautiful life together over 62 years. Time spent with his daughter, son-in-law, and especially his granddaughters brought him his greatest joy. He spoke of them often and with pride, and they will forever cherish the memory of their beloved “Papa.”

Walter is survived by his wife, Joanne (Dhionis) Bonin of Marlborough; his daughter, Danyelle Letendre and her husband John of Hudson; and his two granddaughters, Nicole and Jacqueline “Jackie” Letendre. He also leaves his nephew Jamie Kittredge, niece Kim Kittredge, and many extended family members and friends.
