Joan Roof Obituary

Joan S. (St. Clair) Roof, died suddenly Sunday November 22, 2020 after a period of failing health. She was the wife of 40+ years of the late Clyde Roof who died in 2005. She was born in Hartford CT, the daughter of the late John and Anita (Fregeolle) St. Clair and lived West Falmouth, MA for 13 years.

Joan graduated from Westminster Choir College with multiple degrees is music performance and conducting. Out of college she took a position as music director at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, CT. A life-long musician, she performed professionally in the CT choral group CONCORA, as a soloist in churches throughout CT, and as a violinist in many string quartets and orchestras. An educator of many forms for decades, she taught violin to generations of students, sang in the choir and led a bell choir at Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford, CT. She and regularly volunteered her time in multiple communities and held multi-week children’s music and adult art camps at her home on the Cape.

Upon “retiring” as a musician, Joan focused on her other passion: painting. Always the student, Joan took numerous art classes and workshops while donating both time and artwork to help raise money for local charities.

She is survived by a son Christopher Roof of Cambridge, a daughter Kathryn Deckers and her husband Charles of Marlborough, four grandchildren; Olivia, Braden, Orlando and Cameron, a brother Stephen St. Clair of AZ, a brother-in-law John Stanton of ME and four nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Patricia Stanton.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Falmouth Art Center at https://falmouthart.org

Private funeral arrangements are being planned for a later date.
