Edward J. Gately

Edward J. Gately, 67 of Marlborough passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2022, after a long illness.

He was born in Marlborough, the son of the late Edward J. and Mary E. (Reynolds) Gately.

He attended Marlborough Schools, graduating from Marlborough High School, Class of ’74 and earned his bachelor’s degree in History from Framingham State University.

Ed was employed by Digital Equipment Corporation in Hudson and Maynard as a computer operator for many years. For more than 20 years, he and his brother John operated Gately Bros. Books, traveling around New England buying and selling rare and scarce books and manuscripts at shops and at book fairs, establishing many lasting friendships. He was a member of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Booksellers (MARIAB) and its successor organization, SNEAB.

He is survived by his brother John Gately of Marlborough, his beloved fiancé, Donna Macdonald of Wickford, RI and many cousins and friends.

Two of his favorite events each year were the Clancy Family Reunion and a New Year’s Day party that he and his brother have hosted for many years. This New Year’s party will celebrate Ed’s life.

Burial will be in the Spring in the family lot in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Marlborough, MA.
