Anthony "Tony" Arruda Jr. Obituary

Anthony C. “Tony” Arruda Jr., 90, of Marlborough died peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Tony was born in New Bedford, the son of the late Anthony C. and Maria C. (Mendes) Arruda. He was the oldest of seven children. He graduated from New Bedford High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at UMass Dartmouth. Tony served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 – 1957 and was a Korean War Veteran, spending time stationed at Thule AFB in Greenland as well as locally at Westover AFB in Chicopee, MA.

Tony married the love of his life, Marcelle (Allain) Arruda in 1960, and together they raised six children in their family home in Marlborough. Daytrips to Horseneck Beach and Lincoln Park were highlights of the summers when his children were young. Later in life, they purchased a family vacation home on the Nubble in York, Maine, where countless memories were made with friends and family. Tony’s grandchildren dearly loved their Vovo. Body surfing in icy Maine waves, making his “Vo McMuffins” or blueberry pancakes for breakfast, and happily spending hours creating his incredible spaghetti sauce and meatballs for dinner were some of Tony’s favorite things to do with and for his family.

A passionate sports fan, Tony proudly wore his NY Yankees baseball cap everywhere. He enjoyed Celtics season tickets for a number of years; more recently, he recorded every Celtics game on the DVR so that he and Marcelle could watch them together regardless of the starting time. He loved listening to music and reading. Tony was an avid gardener, backyard bird watcher and crossword puzzle aficionado. Christmas and the 4th of July were his favorite holidays, and Tony created a legacy of joyful family traditions filled with awe and wonder. Tony was proud to have served his country and was a dedicated member of the Immaculate Conception parish. He will be remembered most dearly for his love and devotion to his family.

From the time that Tony and Marcelle brought their very young family to Marlborough, Tony became actively involved in helping to build their new community. Tony was the charter President of the Richer School PTA, he served on the Marlborough City Council, Planning Board, Marlborough High School Building Committee, and the Regional Vocational High School Study Committee. Tony served as President of the Marlborough Jaycees, State Vice President of the MA Jaycees; he was presented with the Outstanding Young Man Award in 1969 and was awarded a lifetime membership in the Massachusetts Jaycees. He was Treasurer of the Friends of the Marlborough Public Library and served on Marlborough’s Board of Assessors for over 30 years.

Tony’s professional career began in electrical engineering and progressed to roles in information systems services, banking product and industry marketing, financial operations, and management consulting. He retired as Chief Financial Officer at MassDevelopment in 2002.

Tony is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marcelle, of Marlborough; his 6 children: Elizabeth Arruda and her fiancé, Scott Anderson of Westford, Anthony Arruda III and his wife, Ellen of Ann Arbor, MI, John Arruda of Framingham, Timothy Arruda and his fiancé, Romilda Mariano of Clinton, Elise LaCroix and her husband, Brian of Marlborough, Christine DiBuono and her husband, AJ of York, ME; 11 grandchildren: Nicole, Leah, Anthony, Gary and his wife Paige, Alex and his wife Shelby, Etsie, Audrey, Jameson, Kirsten, Jeremy and Matthew; a sister, Maria Sylvia and her husband Kenneth of Acushnet, a brother, John and his wife Kathy of North Dartmouth, and many nieces and nephews.
